There is only one mother, and the upcoming 1 May is the perfect moment to pay tribute to her. The origins of this celebration go back to classical antiquity, where, for example, in ancient Greece the arrival of spring was celebrated in honour of Rhea, the mother of the gods, while the Romans used the beginning of March for three days of tribute to Cybele, the mother of all gods.

In Portugal, this tribute to mothers only began in 1950, on the initiative of the Mocidade Portuguesa Feminina. Until 1970, Mother's Day was celebrated on 8 December, but following a request from the Portuguese Episcopal Conference to move it to another date — so that 8 December could remain exclusively linked to Our Lady, patron saint of Portugal — it was shifted to the first Sunday of May.

And so we arrive at 2022, the year in which Mother's Day falls on Sunday 1 May. As with Father's Day, many people choose to mark the occasion by adding a gift to their declarations of love for the person who brought them into the world, making the day even more special.
